I'm a sucker for cel shading or whatever the kids call it, but the scales are really well done, and squashed (due to perspective) quite convincingly.

Sludge sounds better than any piece-of-crap couple seconds of "music" I've ever tried to put together...and I'll tell ya: I can fill a junkyard. Just find something you can't do and stick to it, y'dig? You're makin' the rest of us look bad.

I scrapped the scales for now and then added a bunch of colors because I'm avoiding dithering.



So far I like how it's turning out. I must've tried four different pirate hats until I got the one I'm going with. I need a smoother transition between each side of the hat though. It looks like a straight, blocky kidney tray instead of folded fabric right now. I might keep it as is though from time and energy constraint.

I like the head and bandanna for the most part.

With that said, that alligator is pretty sweet. The hat looks a little awkwardly placed though. Almost like a poorly photoshopped picture.

With this piece I'm doing that mainly because I want the wrong stuff pointed out because I can't post it anywhere else or else the recipient might see it. Although I do like seeing comments other than criticism as well.

Yes, JAC, I know the hat looks awkward. Like it was pasted on. Mainly because I made it seperately and then just lowered it onto his head.

Eh... I don't know. Don't want to I guess. Maybe when of these days I'll try for an in house artist position or something. If they don't see my hand drawn stuff, I guess I could make it in if I practiced animation and general "game art" stuff more.

Each time I open the file, I think "Wow, this is looking a little more like something Graeme Base would make with each save."

I need to fix up the mug, finish up the scales, maybe refine the background, I'm not sure. And perhaps full body this thing. Transition from scales to smooth belly is going to be... hard.

And frankly, I'm glad you didn't dither (didn'ther). It makes things look kinda grainy--which looks good if the piece calls for it. But I much prefer the idea of a smoove alligator. In fact, you'd be fine with fewer colours, even, and maybe a little more AAing.

Oh, and the highlight that crosses the yellow-green line of his belly, near the bottom, how the green highlight and yellow shadow are connected to form an imaginary line? Choice.

Ditto on the dither, and hat needs AA badly, otherwise it's as good as ever, which means pretty damned good.

New hat, scales are iffy.

I came really close to adding a fox on the right. Then I realized how that'd double my work. I'm losing steam on it. Ugh.

I think the hat really needs fixing, it looks out of place even to me.

The hat itself is fine. The placement of the hat is natural, as long as we assume that the hat is somewhat triangular, with the tip at the eyes.

But, the problem is that triangular hats rarely have symbols on them. Having the skull and crossbones on the one visible side of the hat subconciously suggests that that is the front of the hat. I think that's the only reason why people would have a problem with it.

Even then, the hat has been improved vastly, and I wouldn't complain if it was left as it was.

The yellow highlights on the scales are a bit too much, it makes them look like they're sticking out too far.

Yes, I figured the skull and crossbones wouldn't work. And the hat does need fixing, I am just trying to find something that works. It's certainly better than the original, I think. I'll probably have an update on it tomorrow, since my progress has slowed down a lot on it.
